Go to colorado or not?

No - not Colorado in America… Whether to upgrade to the Garmin Colorado or not!

Here is a quick low-down of the pros and cons:

PROS

  • Great improvement of the user interface over the GPS MAP/60 series.
  • Designed with geocachers in mind - rather than being a generic device.
  • Allows the use of topo maps (You must buy them at £140ish).
  • High sensitivity receiver
  • Can download geocache pages to the device, so you can read them in the field.

CONS

  • Only a few hours battery usage (compared to an etrex for example).
  • Uses ‘PDA’ batteries (ie. you can’t just walk into a shop in the dales to buy a replacement).
EDIT: I was wrong - Jake from Garmin posted a comment below to say the colorado uses 2x AA batteries. Excellent!!
  • Can’t mark geocaches as ‘found’. EDIT: Jake from Garmin says that this functionality is in the latest firmware.

Priced at approx £280 - the Garmin Colorado is a very tempting upgrade, especially with those two downsides I’ve listed being eliminated!!

Hi, Chris. Thanks for looking at the Colorado and discussing it here. Just wanted to let you know that the Colorado uses two AA batteries, and you can now mark caches as “found” with the latest software update. The update is available for free on the product page at garmin.com.
